Catholic Carnival 154: Our Culture: Faith, Media, Politics
This week's Catholic Carnival seems to be all about the pieces of our lives that make up our national culture. It seems appropriate to discuss our culture at the start of a new year - we even have posts challenging us to improve it (through learning and teaching our Faith). So without further adieu, here's the Catholic Carnival:
Faith: that sustains us and our culture.
As a first time religious ed teacher (I have first graders), I can attest to the truth of Catholic Matriarch in My Domestic Church's submission. But it's more than that! She offers A Catechetical Challenge for 2008. Are you up to the task?
Father V at Adam's Ale throws a little humor, a lot of truth, and some thoughtful opinion in a post on eulogizing called Not Such A Dead Topic. Think a eulogy should be done at Mass? Read this post first . . .
My Domestic Church gives us a little More on Saint Columba. It all starts with an email - and I would be surprised if you don't learn something new.
And with more to learn, CatholicLand! gets us started learning in O Holy Name. It offers ways to venerate the Holy Name during January (and anytime).
And now for something completely different. Just Another Day of Catholic Pondering offers us a unique look at life in Lambing Season. I can't say I've seen a lamb born (city boy and all that), but I do appreciate the little lesson on God.
Not to be outdone, Cause of Our Joy tells us that Pope Benedict and I are cat people. Unfortunately, her cat died last week, but this is a great eulogy (don't worry, Father V, it isn't in a Mass) of her favored pet.
Another great story comes from The World . . . IMHO with Wisconsin Bishop Breaks from Conference and Opposes Emergency Contraception in Catholic Hospitals. It's great to see a Bishop stand up for life no matter the situation, in my humble opinion. Go read the whole story - and don't miss the "update."
It is a new year and Simple Gifts offers us New Year's Resolution: Elimination Diet. It's not what you think; she's putting her home on the elimination diet in order to live a more simple life. I don't think I'll ever forget the phrase "all earthy crunchy" (and the meaning is so clear!).
Thinking of your resolutions? Book Reviews and More offers us his New Year's Resolutions. He starts with his ups and downs of the last few years and explains his new years resolutions for 2008 (and why he choose them).
And Kate Wicker brings us I Believe. If kids can blindly believe in the magic of Christmas, then we should all be able to embrace the mystery of the cross - even when all of our questions cannot be answered.
Catholic Fire completes our Faith section with more learning on St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Religious. As a homeschooling family, we often ask St. Elizabeth for help, but I learned quite a bit from this post. Go find out for yourself.
Media: Books, movies, and yes, blogs.
Announcing a new attempt to get the truth out on movies, Causa Nostrae Laetitiae lets us know I'm contributing to a new blog: Catholic Media Review. The point is to offer movie reviews based on Catholic teaching, which the USCCB has had trouble with lately. Go check out the new endeavor!
Musings from a Catholic Bookstore stays true to his calling with Choosing Catholic Publishers and Books. It's an interesting approach and good to see he'll keep it updated. As an avid reader I know a lot of these publishers, but not all of them (I'll have to update my wish list . . .)
A Third Way goes back to our media binge with My Favorite Catholic Books of 2007. There are some great books included - and one I own that I haven't read yet (now I have extra incentive).
Daughter of the King also keeps us reading with Book Review: The Holy Way. It's a book by Paula Huston on living a simple life. How was it? Go see for yourself.
Perfect Joy offers us a fascinating post called Caught in the 'Catholic Mom' Vortex. A dad (and a granddad) takes a look at the Catholic-Moms-Blogosphere. Is your plate full?
And our Media section ends appropriately: Catholic Media Review gives us My Top Ten Favorite Films for 2007. Go see if you agree or not (I think everyone's top 10 is a little different). The list includes religious themes as well as just movies.
Politics: it is 2008, after all . . .
It is 2008, which means an election year. So la nouvelle theologie gives us initial thoughts in COMMENTARY: The Huckabee Phenomenon. He explores Governor Huckabee's recent poll results and gives his take on why.
Deo Omnis Gloria brings us another political post with 2008 Presidential Candidates on Abortion. This post takes the main presidential candidates and explore their position on abortion. A quote is included from each candidate, so you get their own words.
Hope you enjoyed the Catholic Carnival as much as I did! Now let's go out and change our culture for the better . . .
God bless,
Jay

Thanks for hosting, Jay!

Hi, Jay. Great job hosting. I just sent you an email, but in case it doesn't make it to your inbox, which seems to be happening... I've submitted to three Carnivals lately and have not been included because my email keeps ending up in peoples' SPAM box. Any suggestions? Can you please add my email address to your address book? Thanks so much, and God bless!

I have sent four submissions and never been listed. Maybe they make you host a carnival before they will let you post on others. Very confusing and frustrating.
