Catholic Carnival 147: Giving, not Receiving

We try to focus on the giving aspects of Advent and Christmas with our children and this Carnival just seemed to go along those lines (maybe it's just the way I was thinking!), so I carved it up in terms of Giving thanks, love, learning and even humor. Enjoy:

Giving Thanks
We Belong to the Lord celebrates Thanksgiving with her grandmother's recipes. And while cooking, why not reflect grandmother's life, love, and wisdom handed down over the years.

The Buckeyes are third, but Sarah is second in this Carnival. At just another day of Catholic pondering she brings us An Unexpected Gift from God. She explains how choosing a godparent became a special gift to her through the wisdom the godparent shared with his goddaughter.

Giving Love
luminousmiseries offers a great penitential devotion in On the Road to Purgatory. It recommends a book exploring how to devote 30 days of prayer for the souls in purgatory - a great devotion particularly during Advent.

Streams of Mercy brings us a wonderful life story with In Memoriam: Jane Denton, wife of Senator Jeremiah Denton Jr.. It is the story of a strong, dedicated Catholic wife, mother, and patriot.

Keeping the focus on heroic sacrifice Mommy Monsters explores the changing nature of family in Family We Don't Get to Pick. This reflection speaks to the heart of adoption and why one person can - and sometimes should - extend themselves heroically on behalf of a child.

Muddy Bathwater tells the story of losing a parish you love in Queen of Our Hearts. It offers a "view from the pew" tells a sad story, but with joyous memories.

Transitus Tiber offers Healing through her experiences. Her baby "grew wings" at 5 weeks gestation. This post explores her thoughts and feelings as well as how her faith has deepened through the experience.

Giving Humor
Play the Dad? No, be the Dad! starts the humor off with Rubrics for Toddlers: Section 1 Introductory Rites. It's a humorous take on the Mass for those of us who do take toddlers each week.

In another humorous take, 50 Days After submits Pope Pius XI: Spaghetti Western Star for your perusal. Did the former pope carry a gun?

Giving Faith and Learning
Catholic Fire tells the story of Blessed Miguel Agustin Pro, S.J., Priest and Martyr. And it includes a great video with the blog post. Viva Christo Rey!

My Domestic Church shows her love with Prayers I Teach My Children. She not only offers her experience, but gives resources for other parents to use as well.

Throwing in a little history, Musings from a Catholic Bookstore brings us The History of Christmas Cards. They aren't as old as you might imagine and actually have protestant roots. Take a look.

Preparing for Advent (the time of preparing, no less), starts with great traditions. Castle of the Immaculate gives us Advent Dreams and Traditions. This post offers several ideas to keep Advent focused and make it special.

HMS Blog meditates on the Mass readings in Fear of Our King. During the penitential season of Advent, we all need some penance.

CatholicInside asks whether our goals are good enough in The Map that God Made. So often we look upon God's laws as bright lines at the edges of our lives, but God's map offers a lot more than that if we look closely and start reading the directions before we get lost.

Postscripts from the Catholic Spitfire Grill challenges us with Apostolic Tessellation. It explores the theory and "proof" behind apostolic succession using a math equation (and does it very effectively, thank you very much).

Deo Omnis Gloria offers us The Importance of Defining Doctrine and the Universal Inquisition. Was the Inquisition a bunch of atrocities committed by the Catholic Church? Before you answer, take a look.

Love shopping? A Third Way wonders what would happen if we had a Black Friday for Jesus. It makes an intriguing point about the nature of Christmas and what we put importance on.

And this blog offers you The Reality of Sex - the Unity of Sex, Love, and Live. A post exploring the nature of sex and its connections to the other aspects of our lives.

And, although it isn't technically a blog, Love to be Catholic offers us a compelling video, Nicean Blues. A guy, a guitar, and the truth of the Catholic Church. What could be better?

God bless,
Jay

Jay,

Thanks for compiling this week's Catholic Carnival. Merry Christmas! It's not to early to say that is it?
