What did you do for your marriage today?
The USCCB (Catholic Bishops) have launched a new campaign that I can really get behind: What did you do for your marriage today?
It's a campaign to encourage married couples by giving them tips and advice on strengthening their marriage. There's even a website called For Your Marriage that is full of interesting advice on marriage. To me it seems the key component is trying to encourage married people to do something everyday - even something small - for their spouse. There are commercials running in several parts of the country and the plan is to push this over the next couple of years.
With marriage collapsing - even among Catholics - in the US, this is a great campaign that can have a positive value on the lives of families. I think this is exactly the kind of encouragement (without being to preachy for nominal or non-Catholics) that can help any man or woman become a better spouse. They also do a great job of dealing with divorce on the site.
Every marriage has difficult times and our society makes it easy to simply dissolve your marriage during these times. I remember in psychology class in college learning that virtually every study shows that those who divorce during a difficult time are more miserable five years later than those who stick it out and remain married. There's a lesson there for all of us.
Please pray for the What did you do for your marriage today? program and talk about it to your friends and family. It's important that everyone is aware of this resource in case they need some marriage help.
God bless,
Jay
PS - Also, I recommend Marriage Encounter for every married couple. It changed my relationship with my spouse in unbelievable ways.
