Martyred for Supporting Marriage

I just read the fascinating story of the "Georgia Martyrs," which were some of the earliest martyrs in the New World. The martyrs were five priests living as missionaries in South Georgia, just north of St. Augustine, Florida and on the barrier islands. The culture they lived in was polygamist and they required those becoming Catholic to have only one wife. When one professing Christian took a second wife, Father Pedro de Corpa told him that he must give up Christianity or his second wife. This man gathered a few friends (called the "War Party") and killed Father Pedro as well as four other Franciscans living among their people.

For me, I enjoyed learning about martyrs from my state (Georgia), but also the story of these priests standing up for the sanctity of marriage. And seeing the sacrament of marriage as so important that they were willing to give their lives as testimony to monogamy. In our day of adultery, divorce, remarriage, etc. this is a great reminder of what we have in Christian marriage. And the importance of fighting for true marriage between one man and one woman - this is a truth that cannot be compromised for any reason. Perhaps the Georgia martyrs can help America in her struggle for identity today.

Thank God for the example of the martyrs.

God bless,
Jay

PS - You can learn more about the Georgia Martyrs here. The Franciscans and the Savannah Diocese in Georgia are working towards canonization of these five priests. They ask for prayers as well as for you to spread the story of the martyrs. And thanks to This Rock magazine for the article.
