Taking a Day Off

Recently Jay and I, with three of my brothers, took a day off to go to the mountains. It was fun with lots of fellowship, hiking, and a good meal to wrap up the day. It was a nice change of pace and something that we all agreed should be done again.

I believe days like this are important. They allow you to build stronger bonds with family and friends. They can be days of refocusing on what's important. A day away from the normal daily duties also provides an opportunity to stop and marvel at the power and beauty of God's creation. As I stood atop the particular mountain we went to, I found myself, once again, moved by the many colors and vastness of this place we call home. God is truly good.

While I always enjoy family trips with my wife and son, this time apart is also healthy for our marriage. I used some of the time on the mountain to meditate on how I was doing as a husband and a father. Returning home exhausted that evening, I realized how much I love my family and value my "ordinary" life.

One of my brothers that joined us is a priest. He too agreed that the time apart, although strenuous due to the hiking, was refreshing and beneficial. So I highly recommend scheduling days like this to everyone. It is important that we make time for leisure. It is equally important that our leisure time be wholesome and spent in good company.

Thanks guys...it was a great day!

In Christ,
Joe

Agreed, Joe! Every year, all of the men in my dad's family spend a weekend on retreat at an Augustinian monastery. Over the years, close friends have also participated. We celebrate Holy Mass. There's also Benediction & Adoration, Confession, prayer, and plenty of organized and spontaneous discussion about our roles as husbands, fathers, sons, and brothers. I would recommend this to anyone.

I emailed some questions to you about the Carnival, but I didn't get a response, so I'm gonna try to get a hold of you this way.

I have a question about submitting an entry. Does it have to be a recent post that I have made on my blog? Or, can it be any of the posts that I have made? Also, if and when I host the carnival, do I only use posts from blogs that are in the Carnival, or can I use posts from any blog? Is there a list somewhere of the blogs that are in the Carnival? About how many posts at other blogs should I choose when I host the Carnival?

Thanks,
Nick, aka "phatcatholic"
