Catholic Carnival LIX: Advent, with Spice
This Catholic Carnival is clearly Advent-related, but there is “spice” from other directions scattered throughout. I’m always amazed by the quality of thought, reflection, and love of Christ exposed in these posts; this week is no different. Enjoy:
So What IS the Reason for the Season? at TMH’s Bacon Bits points out that some churches are closing on Christmas. He states: If practicality or convenience were the basis for Christianity, then I have to wonder whether there would even be a Christianity.
Virgin Mary is Key to Vatican II, Pope Says at Ramblings of a GOP Soccer Mom discusses what she’s learned during homilies on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.
Pope John Paul the Great? at Sacramentum Minimum points out that all of the popes surnamed “the Great” have done something exceptional. He wants to know your thoughts on what that defining moment or event was for Pope John Paul.
gaudete sunday at Fructus Ventris relates her story about the day and how song breaks out!
Mother’s Day at Our Word and Welcome To It reflects on what the Feast of the Immaculate Conception means and our ongoing relationship with our Spiritual Mother.
Doom and Gloom Talk will be Limited to Thirty Minutes at Herb Ely looks at the news; digs out from an ice storm; attends a memorial service and a concert; reflects on the advent readings; and finds new joy in the stories of salvation and Christmas. All in one post!
Can you Imagine? at Confessions of a Hot Carmel Sunday is a beautiful post about the lyrics of a song catching us unaware with a revelation. Take a minute to read this one.
Rejoice in the Lord at HMS Blog reflects on the meaning of Christian rejoicing, drawing from the readings for Gaudete Sunday.
From A Letter Addressed to the Rev. E. B. Pusey, D.D.,
on Occasion of His Eirenicon at Quenta Nârwenion quotes from Venerable John Henry Newman, C.O. on Our Lady, with a particular focus on the Book of Revelation, Chapter 12. Great points made by Ven. Newman.
In Defining an Organism at Ales Rarus a guest poster offers a discussion of biomedical definitions of "organism" in the context of right-to-life issues. Good to know for pro-life discussions with others.
Socrates and Knowledge at Crusader of Justice offers us a short philosophical post on faith and knowledge.
Labor Pains at A Penitent Blogger reflects on life, pain, and faith by beginning with Mary, going through Jesus, and ending with us.
Is Santa Claus a Catholic Priest? at Deo Omnis Gloria explores the reality of St. Nicholas and how it has distorted into Santa Claus. A good read for parents!
And this blog offers Love and Humility: the Virtues of Advent which reflects on how we should view Advent as opposed to Christmas.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this as much as I have.
God bless,
Jay
