Movie Review: Millions
I was drawn to the recent release of Millions on DVD because of it’s use of the Saints in a film. The plot is pretty straightforward: two young boys find a big bag of money that “fell out of the sky”. The boys live with their father, since their mother passed away and one of the boys is extremely religious and has visions of Saints on a regular basis – some notable Saints that appear are St. Peter, St. Francis, St. Claire, and the list goes on.
At times, the movie is touching. Each time the youngest boy sees a Saint, he asks if they’ve met a “Saint Maureen” – a new addition to heaven. He is very concerned with whether his mother, Maureen, has made it to heaven. But unfortunately, the Saints he meets with haven’t run into her yet.
I also thought one of the more interesting aspects of the film involves the faith of each member of the family. The young boy is a clear believer and his brother is clearly unconcerned about God (he enjoys the money in a very American way) and his father is more questionable about his faith – this also bothers the young boy.
Overall the movie was pretty decent, however there is a couple of places where questionable theology is used – I wouldn’t recommend it for children for that reason alone. The plot also involves thieves who are menacing at times and one suggestion of sex between the dad and an outside women – again, not necessarily for children but an entertaining movie for adults. Overall, I’d give it 3 out of 5 stars, since it was a pretty creative melding of religion and a realistic plot line and they reach some thoughtful conclusions at the end – primarily concerning money.
God bless,
Jay

Have you read the novel? It has similar theological problems, but none of the suggested sex.
