Education: A Life-long Pursuit
Many of us are familiar with the old saying:
Everyday you learn something new.
Yet how many of us ardently seek to do so? Education seems to have become something that has been "institutionalized" in our modern society. Many colleges and universities now offer classes for those who wish to gain knowledge after achieving a degree. Such programs are entitled "continuing education" courses. The ironic aspect of such programs is the implication that education somehow ended with the achievement of a college degree. It assumes that the masses of college graduates stopped pursuing any form of education after "receiving their piece of paper." This, of course, limits education to an organized, institutionalized format. Such realities should cause us to reflect on our own lives.
Do we seek to educate ourselves, or better yet do we seek wisdom and knowledge?
As a Catholic I am often stunned at the lackadaisical attitude of many "educated" Catholics. They are quick to explain why they were justified in voting for the likes of John Kerry, but stumble if you ask them to explain the theology of personhood and nature in terms of the Blessed Trinity. Yet such is the case...we would rather be trendy than wise. We would rather be current than "distinctly" Catholic. A truly educated Catholic wouldn't worry him/herself with "if" women will one day be priests or "if" the Church will change her stance on priestly celibacy. Such thoughts reflect a substantial lacking in genuine understanding and knowledge of Catholic theology, or, worst, a radical dissent from truth (which is the opposite of true wisdom).
Education must be viewed as a life-long pursuit, especially in terms of our Catholic faith. The daily pursuit of wisdom and knowledge via Sacred Scripture and the Catechism of the Catholic Church is becoming more and more vital. We must long for wisdom and knowledge. We must, likewise, build our foundation on the "Rock" so that when the storms come our faith will be proven to be true.
If, as Catholics, we recognize that all that we have comes from God, we will naturally beseech Him for wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. We will also recognize that He has founded His Church, the Catholic Church, to guide us into the fullness of His Truth.
In Christ,
Joe
