National Geographics’ In the Womb

National Geographic began airing their newest special, In the Womb, last night. They start with the sperm and egg and follow the baby’s development through birth with lots of interesting tidbits along the way. The show was an excellent cure for pro-choice apathy and I think powerful enough to make someone considering abortion think again.

In particular, they went into detail about what is decided at the time of conception. Physical looks (hair color, eye shape, etc.) and many personality and emotional traits are a function of the genetic code created at contraception. In other words, the things that make you “you” are decided at the moment of conception for the most part. In addition, at 22 days the heart starts beating. Several times during the show I thought to myself, “And a doctor can still legally go in and rip this child to shreds.” It’s a sobering thought.

This show is excellent for children as well – we’re often talking about forming pro-life kids and I think this is the type of information that moves them in that direction. There were a couple times were evolutionary thinking found it’s way into the documentary, but it was overly biased in that direction.

In the end, I highly recommend the show for your family as well. Perhaps we should pass a law requiring those considering abortion to watch it? If you know anyone, suggest it to them!

God bless,
Jay
