Catholic Carnival XXIII: Easter Joy and Terri Schiavo
The tie between Easter’s true joy and the horror being inflicted on Terri Schiavo weighed on the minds of bloggers, so we have an emphasis on these two events, often in the same post. I’ll keep it simple again this week and allow the posts to speak for themselves:
+ Crusader of Justice first makes the connection in The Sign of Contradiction, an Easter Sunday post on Terri Schiavo and those around her.
+ Quenta Nârwenion offers us an excellent post on the sufferings of Our Lord by Venerable John Henry Newman in From Meditations and Devotions. It is a pure Easter post, and one you won’t want to miss.
+ Scattershot offers reflections on Easter, Hamlet, and Terri Schiavo in The Time is Out of Joint. She ties the three together rather nicely . . . and provides an interesting challenge at the end.
+ HMS Blog gives us a meditation on the Easter Vigil Gospel (and other readings) in "Go Quickly and Tell His Disciples . . . Go Tell My Brothers”. The meditation focuses on the relationship between the resurrection and the Church – as always, it is excellent.
+ HerbEly takes a different look at the Terri Schiavo situation in Schiavo Case: Why Our Political Discourse is So Bitter. He makes some interesting points on why we are divided and why the differing points of view feel the way they do (bitter).
+ A Penitent Blogger takes us back to the central meaning of Easter in Was it Real? He reflects on the historicity and faith involved in our understanding of the resurrection. I especially enjoyed the point about “dry history” and the “flame” of faith.
+ Fructus Ventris, which is written by a midwife who has studied biomedical ethics, offers her thoughts on Terri Schiavo in Veritas. Quid est Veritas? Her explanation of the medical realities shaping Terri’s individual life are very interesting.
+ The Blog from the Core opens up a virtual bounty of Easter meditations in Eastertide. Each link is to a sermon from Venerable John Henry Newman for Easter, Ascension, Penecost, or Trinity Sunday. Enjoy the feast.
+ Deo Omnis Gloria mixes Easter with the Terri Schiavo situation in Holy Thursday with an Exclamation Point. The question is: how can we better serve Christ and our fellow man, particularly our fellow disabled man?
+ Notes created another inspirational Java applet in Easter Wings. He included the poem Easter Wings by George Herbert, which ties it all together nicely.
+ And this blog submits, Denial of Deathbed Communion (or Teach Your Kids to Choose a Spouse), which uses the Terri Schiavo debacle to point out the need for parents to teach their children how to choose a spouse.
I also wanted to again mention the Spero Project, which Santificarnos is morphing into. At the present – just before launch – the Spero Project is seeking a slogan: Update on Spero Project: Slogan Contest. The editor also notes:
And there is always room for more people. If you have thought of blogging, but never started a site, get in touch with us. And if you like to write, especially news items, drop us a line. We also still have a couple editing and pre-editing positions open. If you are interested, send us an email.
Finally, if anybody out there has a slogan that embodies this project (just as long as it´s not "Brother, can you Spero dime?), drop us a line in the comments section below, or send an email to: editor - at - santificarnos - dot - com.
As we close this Catholic Carnival, the joy of Easter is upon us. But at the same time, the sorrow of Terri Schiavo’s impending death is as well. By the way, I did find that you can send mass cards, donations, etc to:
The Terri Schindler-Schiavo Foundation
4615 Gulf Blvd.
Suites 104/103
St Petersburg Beach, FL 33706
Thanks to all who participated this week.
God bless,
Jay
