Preparing for Lent

Lent is a preparation that we must prepare for (if that makes sense!). Obviously, everyone takes time to think about what they plan on giving up during Lent in order to prepare for the coming of God. I’m also a strong advocate of “doing” something as well as “giving up” something. Typically, I’ll commit to a stronger prayer regimen, more frequent attendance to Mass, or reading an especially appropriate book. In a sense, this is giving up time for God, but it is obviously very spiritually rewarding.

So as we prepare for our Lent, I thought I would point out some excellent resources for the Lenten season. These come via our partner, HolyFamilyCatalog.com, who always offers free regular shipping. My favorites:

  • Christian Self-Mastery. Self-control is a lifelong process and this book gets you moving in that direction. I think this is the perfect tie-in to the Lenten theme.
  • Brown Wool Scapular. If you aren’t wearing a Scapular, now is the time to start. The brown wool is the perfect symbol of our Lenten fast and the promises associated with the Scapular are worth wearing.
  • Victory Over Vice by Archbishop Fulton Sheen. Give up your vices for Lent by using Fr. Sheen’s excellent advice.
  • The Crown of Thorns Wall Cross. Something about this cross has a very Lenten feel to it. It just seems to tie in well with our thoughts and emotions during this time (I’m usually a “crucifix” kind-of-guy, but this one works)
  • Sacred Heart of Jesus Holy Water font. This isn’t completely Lent-related, but in a way it is. The use of a Holy Water font in the home is an excellent way to keep us focused on Christ and this Sacred Heart one is great. Also, you can teach your children to cross themselves often, especially during Lent.
  • Sterling Silver Crucifix necklace. Another good reminder of Christ’s Sacrifice during this time.

I think we’re personally going to incorporate the film The Passion of the Christ into our Lenten traditions. There’s much value, especially during Lent, in remembering the horror of the crucifixion. Also, if you haven’t been to confession in a while or need a refresher, How to Make a Good Confession is nice, small book that will prepare you well.

May this Lent be your holiest yet.

God bless,
Jay
