Cardinal Arinze: No Communion for Pro-Abortion Politicians

In our home, we try and emphasize the sacredness and holiness of the Sacraments, particularly the Eucharist. After all, we are receiving the second Person of the Trinity in body, soul, blood, and divinity. At this point my children are too small to follow the news, but it would be difficult to convince them of this reality if they knew U.S. Bishops were allowing communion for those who don't accept basic Church teaching on matters as crucial as life.

So, I'm glad to see Cardinal Arinze clearly saying that these politicians cannot receive communion. After all, communion is also a participation in the unity of the Catholic church - a unity built upon doctrine that we all agree with. By receiving communion without consenting to this doctrine, you are in effect lying about your position within the Church.

Now, it is time to pray for the politicians who have choosen a pro-abortion stance to garner votes: may our witness lead them back into the fold.

God bless,
Jay
