A Spirit of Learning

How do we learn? Many would say through "education" and rightfully so. Others would say through "experience" and, again, rightfully so. Yet behind both of these moods of learning is the spirit of learning itself.

As human beings we must continually strive to learn. We most certainly learn from our personal experiences and, likewise, we have learned from our formal education, but do we seek to learn? When we receive our college degree or master degree do we cease to educate ourselves? How many of us truly seek knowledge in matters of faith and morals? In our modern age it is vital that we educate ourselves...that we seek to think with the " mind of Christ", with the "mind of the Church". How many of us take the time to read Sacred Scripture, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and the encyclical letters of Pope John Paul II? How many of us have read various lives of the saints or Church history? It is so important for us to be educated about our Catholic faith.

We live in an amazing time. Never before in the history the world have the resources been available in such a tangible way to all who desire to learn. Never before have we had such an available opportunity to travel and experience different places and cultures, either in USA or abroad. There are so many opportunities for us to learn...yet our culture, our society still attempts to distract us, to deceive us. Therefore, all the more reason that we must have "a spirit of learning". We must "knock", we must "seek" for what is true.

It is extremely important that we hand this on to our children as well. Make learning fun for them. Balance learning with both education and experience. Teach them to enjoy studying Math, English, Science, etc., to enjoy the outdoors, to enjoy working as a family, to appreciate hard work, to learn to play a musical instrument, to excel at cooking...the list goes on and on. Yet most important teach your children both the Catholic faith and Church history. Teach your children to pray and to love Sacred Scripture. It is our duty, our obligation to raise good Catholic children who love our Lord Jesus Christ and His Church.

May the Holy Family continue to bless and guide you and your family. Amen.
