Raising Pro-life Children
Abortion, one of the greatest evils of all time, yet a silent evil. Millions of innocent children are aborted every year...how are we to understand it fully? We do not hear the cries of the victims, we do not see their dismembered bodies, we do not even know their names...all we know is that they are innocent lives lost in the war between the Culture of Life and the Culture of Death. I know this is different than my normal, positive tone, but discussing this is of the utmost importance, because we have a spiritual, moral, and ethical obligation to teach our children the value of human life.
Yet for many of us Catholic parents it is a hard topic to talk to our children about, especially if they are young. We don't know where to begin, or when is the appropriate time. So how do we do it, how do we develop our children spiritually, morally, ethically to be Catholics who believe and live the Church's teachings on abortion?
1) We pray, individually and as a family, for an end to abortion. Prayer is our greatest tool for change, prayer moves mountains. I remember, as a child, our family saying night prayers individually and each of my siblings would pray for an end to abortion. Now at that time we didn't fully understanding what an abortion entailed, but we did know that it killed babies and that it was very important for us to pray for its end.
2) Teach your children the truth, that when a woman is pregnant it is a child inside of her. Simple as this might seem it works. Our children should never question whether or not it is a human being in a woman's womb, like so many do today. Never stop reaffirming this, even when your kids are older.
3) As they get older educate them about abortion. If you can't, then educate yourself about abortion now, so that when that time comes you will be prepared to answer all their questions. Our world attempts to make pro-life families seem uneducated and imposing. It is crucial for you and your children to understand that that is the farthest thing from the truth. Pro-life families are truly educated and willing to risk offending others to stand up for our "fellow citizens and human beings' right to life."
4) Get involved, and teach your children to do the same as they grow older. Vote for candidates who are against abortion, who oppose abortion both personally and in the legislation they approve and promote. Pray the rosary for those who are contemplating having an abortion, for the doctors who perform abortions, for mothers who have had abortions, etc. Attend a prayer rally outside an abortion clinic or make a holy hour before the Blessed Sacrament for an end to abortion.
All of these steps will help to make your children aware of the truth of abortion, but also teach them that most importantly prayer is needed to change our culture from one of death to one of life.
Here are a few links that provide valuable information about abortion, please take the time to review these sites:
May the Holy Family continue to bless and guide you and your family. Amen.
